RE-FET EXPO IN ITALY

From March 31st to April 2nd Coppino Street and the inner basins of Viareggio will host YARE – Yachting After sales & Refit Exhibition, the first international boat show committed to all the services following the purchase of a yacht.

During three days Viareggio will be a hub of the boating industry, thanks to this event aimed to all the industry operators, from builders to brokerage agencies, from designers to suppliers, from registers to marinas.

X-YACHTS CRUISE TO AWARD

This year the European Yacht of the Year Award in the Luxury Cruiser category went to the company with SUCH a brief name, X Yachts, with their new Xc 38. They beat off strong competition from the Contest 57, the Nordship 350, the Sirius 35 and the Sunbeam 42.1.

Managing director Lars Jeppesen accepted the prize on behalf of the company on the first night of the Düsseldorf Boatshow. As usual, the jury for probably the most prestigious yacht-design contest in the world consisted of the managing editors and test experts from eighteen of the leading sailing magazines in Europe.

SAILING ROUND CUBA

American sailors, in the form of the Sarasota Yacht Club, want to sail to Havana, Cuba. The fact that Cuba has been off-limits to American citizens for over 50 years only seems to make it more attractive, but their hopes will be dashed if they don’t get positive word from the US government this month.

Sailing to Havana in the Sarasota to Havana Regatta used to be a fine tradition, until it was stopped in the late 50’s because Fidel Castro’s takeover of Cuba and then the frozen relations between the USA and island.

MEDVEDEV SPLASHES OUT

Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, has spent £26m on a super-yacht with whirlpool baths, an artificial waterfall and a cinema.

The 177 foot-long Sirius has quarters for 12 crew and a range of 5,000 miles.

The Kremlin bought the boat last year from the Proteksan-Turquoise company in Istanbul, the Guardian reports. It is believed to be a replacement for the current presidential yacht, which is due to be decommissioned.

BRITISH YACHTSMEN MISSING

Two british yachtsmen are missing after their boat was hit by a large wave off the Portugese coast.

According to news reports, two British yachtsmen (23 and 52) are missing after their boat was hit by a large wave off the coast of Portugal. The men were sailing from Vigo in northern Spain when their yacht was struck. A 24-year-old crew member managed to swim to safety at Povoa de Varzim.

The Portuguese authorities have sent a helicopter to search for the missing men, and Foreign Office officials have offered consular assistance.

GOOGLE OWNER BUYS YACHT

Electric cars aren’t the only form of transport to peak Google co-founder and Tesla investor Larry Page’s interest, with the billionaire reportedly purchasing a luxury yacht last month.

According to the New Zealand Herald, Page purchased the 59.2m yacht Senses from Kiwi businessman Sir Douglas Myers. Built in 1999 at the Schweers Shipyard with an interior designed by Philippe Starck, it had been listed on the boat international website for €35 million ($45.9 million).
